What Is Klaviyo? What It Does, What It Costs & Who It's For

A plain-English guide to Klaviyo for store owners: what the platform actually does, how it connects to Shopify, how pricing scales, and how to tell whether your brand needs it yet.

October 1, 2026by Giancarlo

Klaviyo is an email and SMS marketing platform built specifically for e-commerce. It plugs into your store, watches what every customer does — orders, product views, abandoned carts — and lets you send automated messages triggered by that behavior. That's the whole pitch: marketing driven by purchase data instead of a static mailing list.

What Klaviyo actually does

Four things, in practice. Flows: automated sequences like welcome, abandoned cart, and post-purchase that run around the clock. Campaigns: the one-off sends — launches, promos, newsletters. Segmentation: slicing your list by real behavior ("spent over $200, hasn't ordered in 90 days") so every send goes to the people it's relevant to. And reporting that ties each email and SMS to actual dollars, not opens.

How it works with Shopify

You install the Klaviyo app, and the integration syncs your catalog, orders, and customers automatically — including historical data, so segments work on day one. On-site tracking tags what visitors browse. From there, every flow trigger and segment condition can use live store data. WooCommerce, BigCommerce, and custom storefronts via API are supported too, but Shopify is the native pairing.

What Klaviyo costs

Pricing scales with the number of active profiles in your account, with SMS billed on top by message volume. There's a free tier big enough to test with, and the bill climbs as your list grows — which is fair when email is driving a third of revenue and painful when you're hoarding subscribers who never open. Keep the list clean and the math stays comfortably in your favor.

Who it's for — and who it isn't

If you sell products online and want email to be a real revenue channel, Klaviyo is the default choice in 2026. If you publish a newsletter, run a service business, or send one email a month, simpler tools cost less and do the job. The platform rewards brands that will actually use behavioral data; it's overkill for a list you only ever blast.

Getting real money out of it

Owning Klaviyo and profiting from Klaviyo are different things — the gap is the flow architecture, the segmentation, and a campaign calendar someone actually runs. Start with the seven flows every store needs, or have a Klaviyo agency build the engine while you run the brand.
