Pro pricing only works if the right people get it. After we unified MK Professional's sites into one storefront where pros and retail customers share a login, the brand needed a clean way to decide who qualifies as a pro — and to get approved pros from "application submitted" to "first order placed" without anyone chasing them by hand.
The application portal
We built a custom application portal into the Shopify site where licensed stylists and salon owners apply for a professional account — credentials, business details, the works. Approved applicants are tagged on their customer account, and that tag is what flips the storefront into pro mode: trade pricing across the professional catalog the moment they log in, on the same site every retail customer uses.
The onboarding flow
Application and approval events trigger a dedicated Klaviyo flow, separate from the consumer email program. New pros get their approval confirmed, a walkthrough of ordering with pro pricing, an introduction to the treatment lines that matter for their chair, and a nudge toward the first order — with branches based on whether they've activated and purchased yet. Because it runs on account events, the pro audience stays cleanly segmented: pros never see consumer promos that undercut their pricing, and retail subscribers never see pro-only messaging.
Gated B2B programs — wholesale, memberships, trade portals — all follow this same pattern: a qualification gate, account-based triggers, and an onboarding flow that does the follow-up no team remembers to do manually. It's part of what we build in our email marketing service.
